The world’s longest living person

On the 6th May 1933 Chinese man Li Ching-Yuen died, at the self-proclaimed age of 256. He was born in 1677. Rumour has it that he was born a lot later: in 1736. In any case, this herb expert claimed to have lived much longer than the second oldest human known to have lived: Jeanne Calment, who died at ‘only’ 122 years and 164 days old. Li had an advantage over Jeanne: he ate goji berries every day – which he believed to hold the secret to a long, healthy life. Jeanne probably never knew this berry.

Did Li exaggerate his age? Probably, yes, but there are testimonials by people whose grandfathers knew Li as an adult man when they were children. As an advisor and herbalist, Li was attached to the Chinese army until a ripe old age. Does the goji berry truly contribute to a longer life? We have no idea, but it is certainly no punishment to eat this berry. And the fruit is rich in antioxidants, so you never know…
